Welcome to Abadá-capoeira DC

CAPOEIRA (pronounced ka-poo-eyh-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art and self-defense discipline that  brings together fighting techniques, acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs, in a rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit. Capoeira helps people to approach conflict, fear, and uncertainty with greater confidence, determination, and humor. It also helps developing all sorts of physical, mental and social skills.

The mission of Abadá-capoeira DC is to provide great capoeira experience in Maryland, Virginia and the whole Washington DC area, by preserving, developing, and sharing the art of capoeira with integrity and respect. Abadá-capoeira DC seeks to inspire and empower people to realize their full potential as responsible, confident, productive members of society. By consistently seeking out new creative ways of exploring and sharing the dynamic aspects of the multi-faceted art of capoeira, Abadá-capoeira DC intends to be a force in the preservation and development of Brazilian culture and art.

Abadá-capoeira is represented throughout Brazil and in over 30 countries. In the DC area, Abadá-capoeira is under the guidance of Instrutora Yara, who has been a capoeira practitioner for over twenty-five years, a capoeira teacher for over twelve years, and who has been traveling around the world showing this art. Yara has held workshops and given lectures about capoeira and is qualified to teach it to the most diverse groups: children, adolescents, adults, people with special needs, and the elderly. Yara Cordeiro holds Psychology and Physical Education Bachelor's degrees. She received Graduate Degrees in Sports Psychology and in Capoeira from the Brasília University (UnB) and a Master’s Degree in Psychology from the Brasília Catholic University (UCB).
